Monthly Book Log {September 2018, Age 3.5 and 5.5}
I’m so grateful for these blog posts because I truly cannot remember what we’ve read from one month to the next! And, in the case of this month, from the start of one month to the end! What a busy month of “back to (home)schooling” and all that’s entailed in new routines. We’ve been immersed in so many seasonal picture books, celebrating the Harvest Moon, the start of autumn, growth mindset to set the school year on a good path, and folktales to go along with our geography unit. Somehow we managed to squeeze these chapter/audiobooks in too!

Chapter Books
A New Friend (Sophie Mouse series) by Poppy Green. We adore this series! As seen here, here, and here (three past months’ book logs!). Another volume might appear on October’s list 😉
Hilda the Hen Who Wouldn’t Give Up by Jill Tomlinson. I can’t remember where I learned about this book, but it was perfect for our focus on “growth mindset”! This is a great early chapter book, with 95 pages, a quick (and often hilarious) plot, and a few illustrations. Each night, PB would anxiously ask to read it, with a bemused comment of, “I wonder what trouble Hilda will get into next?!” Such a shame that it’s out of print, but we were grateful for our library’s interlibrary loan system!
Autumn is for Apple Pie: God Gives Us Friends When We’re Having a Bad Day by Wendy Dunham. This is such a sweet seasonal series (Tales of Buttercup Grove). We read this in one sitting, though it is broken into 4 chapters. A great early reader option with lots of colored illustrations, and a gentle, wholesome plot in which a string of animals facing a bad day are invited to join in the fun of baking an apple pie. The only truly faith-based aspect is on the final page which quotes a Bible verse.
Audiobooks
The Little Town on the Prairie. I can hardly believe we are up to book SEVEN of this series. Both my bookworms love it so much. I am loving the interweaving of Almanzo Wilder. I said at one point to the boys, “He’s going to be her husband, but she doesn’t know it yet!” To which KB replied, “I bet he does!” LOL.
