Footwear for Homeschool Moms

A niche topic, but in my opinion footwear is something that’s not talked about in the homeschool world nearly enough! Am I showing my age or what, sharing about supportive footwear?!

Several years ago I jumped onto the minimalist footwear bandwagon. I researched and read a ton (surprised?) and I was obsessed with zero drop and wide toe boxes and all things minimalist shoes. I still think that is a valid and lovely option for some people. (I found several minimalist shoes that I LOVED, which I’ll share below.)

However, I sadly found that my feet are not compatible with that lifestyle. It turns out that I have high arches that collapse when I walk, causing the force of each step to put the pressure of my body weight in different areas of my feet, causing calluses and other chronic issues. I was astonished to find myself regularly visiting a podiatrist last year!

I also found the more that I spoke to homeschool moms that many of us share a similar story. My podiatrist concurred that for those of us who spend a lot of time at home in socked feet on hard surfaces it can be a recipe for trouble. I mourned the loss of my slipper socks and went on a search for house shoes. We don’t wear our outdoor shoes inside, and I wanted something that felt more cozy anyhow. Here’s what I live in now:

  1. Oofos. This is my warm weather option and I LOOOOOVE them! After trying several different “recovery sandals,” this was by far the winner between the comfort/support level and the adjustable sizing of the strap. I am so happy to slip my feet into these.
  2. Vionics. This is a brand to get to know. Their footwear is podiatrist designed and super supportive. I live in these all winter. For going out, I love these adorable chelsea booties. And these loafers  were my Back to School gift for myself for the fall.
  3. Insoles + New Balance sneakers. I got a pair of custom insoles from RoadRunner (for about $500 cheaper than the insoles at the podistrist, might I add) and pair them with my favorite New Balance sneakers that are designated house shoes. These are SO light weight and my feet never tire in them.

BUT if you’re in the minimalist shoe camp:

Hope that helps! I’ve tried on so many shoes these past years, so hopefully some of my trial & error will help you out!
