Berry Good Books {Picture Books to Pair with Berries!}
Is there anything sweeter than a fresh picked berry? How about pairing a berry with a sweet story? My bookworms and I went strawberry picking this past weekend, and we’ve been savoring these titles while munching on our berries.
We rarely eat a meal (or a snack) without reading at some point (gotta capitalize on those times when my busy guys are still and focused! #multitasking #winning).

Jamberry by Bruce Degen. (We rediscovered this during my Picture Book Tour stop in the D Section.) Best for the youngest bookworms through kinder. Rhyming, fantastical fun!
Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey (Caldecott Honor) A classic for everyone! But probably best for preschool-early elementary.
The Grey Lady and the Strawberry Snatcher by Molly Bang (Caldecott Honor). A wordless book, also a Caldecott Honor. The Strawberry Snatcher may be “spooky” for some young readers, but I know of young toddler who adore this. The wordless format makes it a nice choice up through mid elementary.
Peter in Blueberry Land by Elsa Beskow. We adore the sweet tales by Elsa Beskow which normally– this title included– involve fairies, elves, and other magical creatures. This is a fun blueberry themed one great for preschool-elementary.
Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes by Eric Litwin; ill by James Dean. A toddler classic which probably needs no introduction!
The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big, Hungry Bear by Don & Audrey Wood. Both of my kids adore this and laugh hysterically at the illustrations of the sweet little strawberry-picking mouse’s efforts to hide his prized fruit from the hungry bear. These is a great title for early inference skills as much is told through the illustrations that the text leaves unsaid. It’s also a quick read, making it a nice choice for the Two Minute Attention Span crowd. Toddler-early elementary.
Blueberries for the Queen by John & Katherine Paterson; ill by Susan Jeffers. Blueberries are a sideline character in this story, but we thought it was worth a place on this list! Based on a true story from WWII era about a boy who wants to do “war work” but learns the value of “peace work” via blueberries. Out of print 🙁 Check your library 🙂
Sweet Strawberries by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor; ill by Rosalind Charney Kaye. This story doesn’t center around strawberries, but it’s such a nice story that I’m including it in this list– a powerful message about perspective and attitude. Out of print 🙁 Check your library 🙂
I am so not the themed snack type of mom, but Preschool Bookworm begged that I make these strawberry mice after his nature class teacher made them for our final class. A nice combo of a little mouse AND a red, ripe strawberry 🙂
